이 책은 한반도에서 남북분단정권이 성립된 1948년 8～9월부터 남한에서 이명박정부가 출범한 2008년 2월 직전까지 약 60년에 걸쳐 남한사회에서 전개된 통일논쟁 및 북한논쟁을 시기별로 분석한 것이다. 통일논쟁 및 북한논쟁은 각계각층에서 다양하게 전개됐다. 그러나 그 논쟁을 단순화시킨다면 이른바 보수우파적-친미반북적 시각과 이른바 진보좌파적-반미친북적 시각의 차이에서 접근할 수 있다. 이 책은 그러한 시각이 형성되고 발전한 배경과 그 배경에 작용한 요인들을 분석했다. 이 분석에서 분명히 나타난 것은 두 시각 모두 그 역사적 뿌리가 깊으며 이념적 갈등의 정도가 심각하다는 사실이다. 이 책은 남한사회가 이념적으로 양분화되어 있으며, 이것이 정부의 통일정책 및 대북정책에 영향을 미치고 있다고 주장한다.

In the book, the author predicted that the ideological rift would soon evolve into ideological conflict, which will have serious implications upon the internal politics and external relations of South Korea in general and inter-Korean relations in particular. The author could see that these debates presented an excellent opportunity to examine the nature of the South Korean politics. Indeed, under the considerably free atmosphere under the Kim Dae Jung (Kim Taejung) and Roh Moo-hyun(Ro Muhy?n) administrations, almost all opinions have been expressed demonstrating a wide spectrum in ideological colors. Diverse political forces in South Korea have been fighting on the issues of North Korea and unification, inexorably leading to widening social polarization in the South. Through the analysis of the debates, one may understand much better the basic character and agenda of the South Korean politics from the ideological perspectives through the analysis of the debates.
